Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha announced significant reforms in the education sector, unveiling plans to establish 1,220 school clusters across the country. These clusters will be overseen by 350 newly formed supervisory school boards, aiming to streamline educational administration and improve efficiency.
Addressing the media at the Presidential Media Centre under the theme of ‘Collective Path to a Stable Country’, Dr. Premajayantha highlighted the urgency of these reforms. He noted that a comprehensive Cabinet memorandum outlining the reforms will soon be presented, accompanied by the issuance of relevant circulars.
Under the new system, school authorities will have the autonomy to allocate students from year 01 to year 11 to leading schools within their clusters for Advanced Level education, fostering educational excellence. Additionally, efforts to address teacher shortages in critical subjects such as chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and technology are underway, with over 3,000 candidates appointed based on subject expertise.
Moreover, the Minister emphasized ongoing efforts to address various challenges faced by the education sector, including the resolution of issues concerning school principals and the recruitment of personnel to fill vacancies within the Education Administration Service. With these reforms, the government aims to enhance the quality of education and ensure a brighter future for Sri Lanka’s youth.
