FitsAir launches exclusive direct service between Colombo and Ahmedabad, boosting connectivity

The inaugural flight took off on June 19, 2026, with the new route operating three times a week. The service is expected to strengthen travel, tourism, trade, and investment ties between Sri Lanka and India, particularly with Gujarat, one of India’s most economically dynamic states.

Ahmedabad serves as a major commercial and industrial hub and is widely regarded as the gateway to Gujarat. The launch of the direct route provides travellers with a faster and more convenient option while supporting growing business and tourism exchanges between the two regions.

The introduction of the service aligns with FitsAir’s broader expansion strategy aimed at increasing regional connectivity through affordable and accessible air travel. As Sri Lanka’s first privately owned airline, FitsAir continues to expand its network while positioning itself as a competitive player in South Asian aviation.

A special ceremony was held to commemorate the launch, bringing together representatives from the airline, the travel trade, tourism stakeholders, Walker’s Tours, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, and Cinnamon Life City of Dreams. The event highlighted the importance of enhanced connectivity in driving tourism growth and strengthening economic partnerships.

Speaking at the launch, FitsAir Executive Director Ammar Kassim said that air routes serve a greater purpose than simply connecting airports. He noted that they help connect people, facilitate business opportunities, encourage tourism, and strengthen international partnerships.

Kassim described the launch as an important step for the airline and emphasised that the new route offers the only direct connection between Colombo and Ahmedabad. According to him, the service is expected to simplify travel while opening new opportunities for economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and Gujarat.

Passengers can now make reservations through the airline’s official booking channels, including its website, ticketing office, and authorised travel agents.

The launch also reshapes the competitive landscape for travel between the two cities. Before the introduction of the non-stop route, passengers travelling between Colombo and Ahmedabad were required to use indirect flights operated by airlines such as IndiGo and SriLankan Airlines.

These services typically involved stopovers in major Indian cities including Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, or New Delhi. Depending on the connection schedule, total travel times often ranged from seven to more than twelve hours.

The new direct flights Colombo Ahmedabad service significantly reduces travel time to approximately three hours and forty minutes. This represents a substantial improvement compared to the lengthy transit journeys previously required, offering a more efficient option for both corporate and leisure travellers.

Industry observers believe the route could attract strong demand from business travellers seeking faster access to Gujarat’s commercial centres, as well as tourists looking for convenient short-haul travel options. The reduced travel time may also encourage increased inbound tourism to Sri Lanka from Western India, a market with growing outbound travel demand.

While competing carriers continue to offer broader network connectivity through their hub operations, FitsAir currently enjoys a unique position as the sole operator of non-stop services on this route. This competitive advantage is expected to strengthen the airline’s market presence and support its ongoing expansion plans.

The introduction of the route comes at a time when regional air travel demand continues to recover and grow across South Asia. Improved connectivity between Sri Lanka and India remains a key driver of tourism arrivals, business travel, and bilateral economic engagement.

The new FitsAir Ahmedabad route is therefore expected to play an important role in strengthening people-to-people connections while supporting broader commercial and investment opportunities between Sri Lanka and Gujarat. As demand develops, the route could become an important component of the airline’s regional growth strategy and contribute to expanding aviation links between the two neighbouring countries.

With shorter travel times, direct connectivity, and growing demand from both leisure and business segments, the launch represents a significant addition to Sri Lanka’s international aviation network.
