Windforce announces commissioning of 389 KWp off-grid solar power project in Zanzibar
Windforce PLC announced the successful commissioning of a 389 KWp Ground Mount Off-Grid Solar Power Project on Bawe Island in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The company said the project demonstrates its continued focus on expanding Renewable energy infrastructure while supporting environmentally sustainable development beyond Sri Lanka.
The project was initially announced on November 9, 2023, and reached completion on July 15, 2024, following an extended implementation period. According to the company, the delay resulted from infrastructure development requirements that needed to be completed by the client before construction could be finalised.
In a filing to the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), Windforce stated that the successful completion of the project reflects its commitment to advancing renewable energy technologies, promoting sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions through clean energy generation.
The agreement for the project was signed in November 2023, when Windforce PLC secured the contract to design and build an off-grid solar power system for Bawe Retreat Limited. The client is developing a luxury resort comprising 70 rooms on Bawe Island, one of Zanzibar’s emerging tourism destinations.
Under the agreement, Windforce was responsible for the engineering, design, procurement, installation, testing and final commissioning of the solar power facility. The off-grid system has been designed to provide reliable renewable electricity for the resort, reducing dependence on conventional energy sources while supporting environmentally responsible tourism development.
The project highlights the increasing role of Renewable energy in powering hospitality developments, particularly in remote island locations where access to traditional electricity infrastructure may be limited. Off-grid solar systems have become an increasingly attractive solution for resorts seeking greater energy independence, lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact.
Earlier disclosures by the company revealed that the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project was valued at US$292,588, with an estimated profit margin of 15 percent for Windforce.
The successful commissioning also strengthens Windforce’s growing portfolio of international renewable energy projects. The company has continued to leverage its engineering expertise to undertake projects across regional markets while expanding its presence beyond Sri Lanka.
As governments and private sector investors continue to prioritise sustainability, demand for renewable energy solutions is expected to grow across sectors including tourism, manufacturing and commercial infrastructure. Projects such as the Bawe Island solar installation demonstrate how clean energy technologies can support both operational efficiency and long-term environmental objectives.
For Windforce, the Zanzibar project represents another important step in strengthening its reputation as a regional renewable energy developer capable of delivering end-to-end engineering, procurement and construction services for complex solar energy projects.
The latest announcement also reflects the broader trend of Sri Lankan engineering companies expanding into overseas markets by providing specialised expertise in sustainable infrastructure development. Through such projects, local companies are increasingly contributing to regional clean energy initiatives while creating new international business opportunities.
With Windforce announces commissioning of 389 KWp off-grid solar power project in Zanzibar now completed, the company continues to reinforce its commitment to innovation, sustainability and the delivery of high-quality renewable energy solutions for clients across international markets.
