Net foreign selling continued for a second consecutive month, with cumulative outflows now representing a sustained trend rather than a single-day shift

Foreign investors extended their net selling position at the Colombo Stock Exchange, continuing a pattern that has now persisted through the current month and much of the year to date.
The market recorded a net foreign outflow of LKR 606.0 million for the session. On its own, a single day’s outflow offers limited insight into investor positioning. Viewed against the broader trend, however, the figure fits a more sustained pattern of foreign disengagement: month-to-date net foreign outflows stand at LKR 18.6 billion, while year-to-date outflows have reached LKR 54.9 billion.
Trading activity showed elevated volume for the day, with 80.22 million shares changing hands, up sharply from the prior session. This was largely attributed to a single crossing in John Keells Holdings (JKH), which alone accounted for a significant share of both turnover and volume. Total market turnover came in at LKR 2.04 billion, which remained 33.7% below the monthly average turnover of LKR 3.1 billion, indicating that broader trading interest has not kept pace with the headline volume figure.
The Capital Goods sector dominated turnover for the day, contributing 49% of total trading activity, with the Food, Beverage & Tobacco and Healthcare Equipment sectors together accounting for a further 23%.
Both benchmark indices closed lower. The All Share Price Index (ASPI) declined 137.81 points, or 0.64%, to close at 21,479.07, while the S&P SL20 fell 43.63 points, or 0.72%, to end the session at 6,040.91.
Among the day’s most actively traded counters by turnover, JKH, AMSL, MELS, SIRA and RCL together accounted for the bulk of the day’s activity outside the “Other” category. On the foreign flow side, JKH also recorded the largest single net foreign outflow at LKR 567.5 million, followed by BUKI and MELS.

Business Impact
Sustained foreign outflows of this scale over a full calendar year can weigh on secondary market liquidity for large-cap, foreign-held counters and may affect valuations for companies reliant on foreign institutional participation. For exporters and multinational-linked businesses monitoring capital market sentiment as a broader indicator of external investor confidence, the persistence of this trend — rather than any single day’s figure — is the more relevant signal to track. Local institutional and retail participation will likely remain the primary driver of near-term market direction if foreign positioning stays net negative.
