Sri Lanka Boosts Renewable Energy with Solar and Wind Power Projects

Sri Lanka is making significant strides towards increasing its renewable energy capacity with the announcement of two major projects. Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 150-megawatt (MW) ground-mounted solar project in Hambantota. This project, representing a $150 million investment, will be developed at the Solar Energy Park in Gannoruwa.

Uniquely, the project will be undertaken by a consortium of 17 local developers. These developers will contribute individual solar power plants, with 13 plants generating 10 MW each and four plants generating 5 MW each, collectively reaching the 150 MW target. The project will also encompass the construction of necessary transmission and grid facilities.

This initiative utilizes a new business model that leverages the Ceylon Electricity Board’s Standardized Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA). Construction is expected to begin in May 2024, with the project aiming to connect to the National Grid by mid-2025.

Furthermore, Minister Wijesekera announced the launch of International Competitive Bids (ICBs) for a 50 MW wind farm facility in Mannar. This project seeks developers with the necessary financial and technical expertise to establish the wind farm on a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) basis. Proposals are due by May 9th, 2024.

The Sri Lankan government’s plan is to integrate all approved renewable energy projects into the National Grid by 2030. These projects, including the 150 MW solar farm and the potential 50 MW wind farm, represent a significant step forward in the country’s transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
