Business delegation pursues investment in education, agri-tech, IT and tourism across Canada

A Sri Lanka Canada trade delegation representing key sectors of the island economy is conducting a multi-city visit to Canada to explore investment and partnership opportunities. Organised by the Sri Lanka – Canada Business Council of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with support from the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Canada, the team is meeting Canadian business leaders, government officials and industry bodies in Toronto, Ottawa and other centres to map pathways for two-way investment. Delegation members include representatives from education, agriculture, information technology and tourism, each seeking practical collaboration that can translate into joint ventures, academic exchanges and technology transfer.

Discussions in the agriculture sector have focused on Canadian investment in agri-tech, food processing and sustainable farming practices that can help raise productivity and value-added exports. In parallel, meetings with IT firms and startups are centred on digital innovation, software services and start-up partnerships that could increase Sri Lanka’s access to international markets and technical expertise. Tourism sessions have emphasised building stronger travel links, co-marketing niche destinations and productising experiences to attract Canadian visitors year-round.

The delegation will take part in sessions of the Canadian Bureau for International Education, where officials and university representatives are exploring joint degree programmes, student exchanges and research collaborations. These education linkages are being pitched not only as academic partnerships but also as avenues to strengthen skills, attract foreign students and encourage knowledge transfer between institutions in both countries. Across the meetings, business chambers and private companies are being invited to identify concrete pilot projects that could be implemented quickly and scaled with both public and private support.

Organisers say the mission aims to convert dialogue into actionable deals that support sustainable investment and job creation in Sri Lanka while providing Canadian partners new market access and collaboration opportunities. Officials from the Ceylon Chamber have emphasised the delegation’s pragmatic approach: prioritise sectors with clear complementarities, match credible Sri Lankan counterparts with vetted Canadian partners, and fast-track regulatory or incentive discussions where necessary. Observers note that success will depend on follow-up mechanisms, transparent deal structures and the ability to mobilise finance and technical assistance to turn initial memoranda into operational ventures.
