Sri Lankan Chamber of Commerce Recognizes Sustainability Leaders

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) hosted its 20th Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Awards (BCCS) ceremony, recognizing Sri Lankan companies for their commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

The BCCS Awards serve as a cornerstone of the CCC’s efforts to promote sustainable practices within the Sri Lankan corporate sector. Chairman Duminada Hulangamuwa emphasized the importance of leadership from top management in driving sustainability initiatives. The competition itself focuses on six key areas: environment, customer relations, community relations, governance, financial performance, and economic contribution. Applications are rigorously evaluated by Sri Lankan sustainability experts.

Originally established two decades ago to encourage corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, the awards have evolved to reflect the growing importance of comprehensive sustainability practices. The BCCS Awards now emphasize the integration of the “3Ps” – Planet, People, and Profit – into core business strategies. This approach encourages Sri Lankan corporations to prioritize environmental and social well-being alongside economic success.

The CCC’s leadership in sustainability extends beyond the awards ceremony. As the leading voice for Sri Lanka’s private sector, the CCC champions the adoption of new sustainability tools and best practices among its members. This year’s BCCS Awards ceremony saw a record-breaking number of applicants, exceeding 90 submissions.

Talawakelle Tea Estates emerged victorious, receiving the coveted “Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Award 2023.” Aitken Spence and Nestle Lanka were recognized as the first and second runners-up respectively. The BCCS Awards remain a prestigious platform for celebrating Sri Lanka’s corporate sustainability champions, highlighting companies that excel in creating social and environmental value alongside financial gain.
