State Minister Calls for Evaluation on Lifted Restrictions on Vehicle Imports

Minister of State for Finance Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has requested a special report from vehicle importers regarding the removal of vehicle import restrictions and its potential impacts. This report, compiled by industry experts, is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the future of vehicle imports in the country.

During a meeting between the Vehicle Importers Association and the Minister at the Ministry of Finance, importers highlighted the practicality of importing vehicles in various categories rather than all at once. They proposed that permissions be granted for the import of vehicles required for public transport, used vehicles, and private vehicles in phases, emphasizing the need for a structured approach.

The discussions also delved into challenges surrounding tax payments related to vehicle imports. Addressing these issues comprehensively is crucial for streamlining import processes and ensuring smooth operations within the automotive industry.

The Minister’s proactive engagement with importers reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for the automotive sector while addressing concerns and seeking input from industry stakeholders.
