Port City Colombo Lights of Hope marked the start of the festive season with a message of unity as Sri Lanka continues its recovery journey after Cyclone Ditwah. The ceremonial lighting brought together leaders and stakeholders in a shared moment of reflection and optimism.
Port City Colombo Lights of Hope ceremony reflects unity and resilience
The Port City Colombo Lights of Hope ceremony held in mid-December emerged as a powerful symbol of solidarity, resilience, and shared responsibility during a period of national rebuilding. Organised as part of Port City Colombo’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, the event aligned with the Western Province’s broader “Lights of Hope” initiative, reinforcing the importance of unity as communities across Sri Lanka recover from the effects of Cyclone Ditwah.
Set against the backdrop of ongoing recovery efforts, the ceremony extended beyond a festive observance. It provided a platform for reflection on collective loss, appreciation for cooperation, and renewed commitment to rebuilding. Senior government officials, dignitaries, development partners, and stakeholders were in attendance, highlighting the significance of the occasion within both public and private spheres.
The event was graced by Hon. Hanif Yusoof, Governor of the Western Province, who attended as Chief Guest. In his address, the Governor emphasised the importance of collective responsibility during times of national challenge. He called on communities, institutions, and the private sector to stand together, noting that recovery is most effective when driven by shared purpose and coordinated action.
The Governor also acknowledged the tangible contributions made by CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd. toward national recovery. These included a contribution of Rs. 10 million to the Government’s “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” Fund, as well as the deployment of heavy machinery and technical expertise along the A5 route between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. This support played a role in disaster response and infrastructure restoration efforts in areas affected by severe weather conditions.
Addressing the gathering, Harsha Amarasekera (PC), Chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, underscored that the Port City Colombo Lights of Hope ceremony carried meaning beyond tradition. He noted that aligning the event with the Western Province’s initiative reflected Port City Colombo’s commitment to responsible engagement and national solidarity during difficult times. According to him, such gestures reinforce trust and demonstrate how large-scale developments can contribute positively to society.
He further highlighted the strong partnership between the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, the Government, and CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd. This collaboration, he observed, enabled a swift and coordinated response to disaster relief needs, illustrating the value of public-private cooperation in times of crisis. The Chairman commended the prompt mobilisation of resources and expertise, describing it as an example of responsible corporate citizenship.
One of the most poignant moments of the evening was the observance of a one-minute silence. Attendees paused in remembrance, prayer, and solidarity with those affected by Cyclone Ditwah. The silence served as a collective acknowledgment of loss and hardship, while also expressing hope for healing and recovery. This moment resonated deeply with participants, reinforcing the human dimension behind infrastructure restoration and policy measures.
The ceremonial lighting of the Christmas Tree marked the symbolic culmination of the event. The tree was lit jointly by Hon. Hanif Yusoof, Mr. Russel Aponsu, Senior Additional Secretary to the President, Harsha Amarasekera (PC), and Mr. Xiong Hongfeng, Managing Director of CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd. As the lights illuminated the tree, Port City Colombo formally joined the wider “Lights of Hope” shining across the Western Province, representing collective resolve and optimism.
By linking a cherished seasonal tradition with a province-wide public initiative, the event reinforced Port City Colombo’s role as a socially conscious development. The ceremony conveyed a clear message that economic progress and social responsibility can advance together, particularly during periods of national challenge. It also demonstrated how symbolic actions, when aligned with tangible support, can inspire confidence and unity.
As Sri Lanka continues to rebuild and strengthen resilience against future challenges, initiatives such as Port City Colombo Lights of Hope offer a reminder that recovery is not solely about infrastructure and funding. It is also about shared values, collaboration, and the willingness of institutions and communities to stand together. Through this ceremony, Port City Colombo reaffirmed its commitment to being not just a driver of investment and development, but also a partner in the nation’s journey toward renewal and long-term resilience.
