Commercial Bank Superbrand status has once again reinforced the institution’s leadership in Sri Lanka’s banking sector, recognising more than a century of trust, consistent performance, and deep consumer connection built through innovation, governance, and service excellence.
Commercial Bank Superbrand status highlights enduring trust and leadership
The Commercial Bank of Ceylon has strengthened its standing as Sri Lanka’s most influential banking brand with the reaffirmation of Commercial Bank Superbrand status, a globally respected recognition awarded only to brands that demonstrate exceptional credibility, consistency, and emotional resonance with consumers. The accolade places the Bank among an elite group of iconic brands recognised across international markets.
The Superbrand honour reflects more than marketing visibility. It acknowledges sustained leadership shaped by long-term value creation, reliability, and strategic clarity. For Commercial Bank, the recognition draws on a legacy spanning over a century, during which the institution has consistently set benchmarks in governance, customer service, innovation, and financial strength within Sri Lanka’s banking industry.
The award was formally accepted on behalf of the Bank by Chief Operating Officer S. Prabagar and Assistant General Manager (Marketing) Ashani Senaratne, underscoring the collective institutional effort behind the brand’s continued prominence. According to the Bank, the Superbrand recognition encapsulates multiple dimensions of leadership, including being Sri Lanka’s most awarded and most respected bank, its role as a service leader, and its track record of sector-first achievements.
Commercial Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sanath Manatunge, emphasised that the recognition is rooted in tangible performance rather than promotional narratives. He noted that the Bank’s Superbrand standing has been built over decades through consistent delivery, honouring commitments, and maintaining a clear sense of purpose. This long-term approach, he said, has shaped the qualities that define the institution’s identity and reinforce trust among customers, investors, and stakeholders.
Superbrand status is conferred by Superbrands, the world’s largest independent authority on branding, which operates in more than 85 countries and has evaluated approximately 40,000 brands globally. Participation in the Superbrands programme is strictly by invitation, following rigorous assessment criteria that examine brand strength, market leadership, and consumer perception. The inclusion of Commercial Bank in this global framework highlights its relevance beyond national borders.
The recognition comes against the backdrop of strong financial performance by the Commercial Bank Group. At the end of the third quarter of 2025, the Group reported assets of Rs. 3.23 trillion, deposits amounting to Rs. 2.59 trillion, and a loan portfolio of Rs. 1.9 trillion. Pre-tax profits reached Rs. 73.35 billion, while net profits stood at Rs. 48.02 billion, reflecting resilience amid challenging economic conditions.
Commercial Bank has also retained its position as the country’s largest lender to the small and medium enterprise sector for the fifth consecutive year, according to rankings by the Ministry of Finance. This sustained commitment to SMEs has played a central role in supporting economic activity and entrepreneurship across Sri Lanka, further strengthening the Bank’s brand equity.
In independent brand valuations, the Bank continues to rank prominently. It was named the most valuable private sector bank brand in Sri Lanka and the second most valuable brand across all sectors by Brand Finance, while also securing the top position in the Business Today Top 40 rankings. These distinctions reinforce the breadth of the Bank’s reputation across financial and corporate audiences.
During 2025, Commercial Bank maintained its status as Sri Lanka’s most internationally recognised bank, winning a wide array of prestigious awards. These included the Global Finance “Best Bank in Sri Lanka” award for the 23rd consecutive year, multiple honours from Euromoney, leading accolades from Asian Banking & Finance, and top recognition at the LankaPay Technovation Awards for excellence in digital payments.
The Bank’s leadership in innovation and sustainability has further strengthened its brand standing. Commercial Bank was the first Sri Lankan bank to be listed among the Top 1000 Banks of the World, maintains the highest Tier I capital base in the domestic banking system, and has emerged as a pioneer in digital banking transformation. It is also Sri Lanka’s first bank to achieve 100 percent carbon neutrality, aligning its operations with global sustainability standards.
Taken together, these achievements explain why Commercial Bank Superbrand status continues to resonate with consumers and industry observers alike. The recognition reflects not only past accomplishments but also the institution’s capacity to adapt, lead, and remain relevant in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.
