Healthguard Distribution has completed a major upgrade of its Western Regional Distribution Centre (WRDC) in Colombo 15, positioning the facility as the central hub of an integrated “port to pharmacy” network. The move is aimed at improving the availability, safety, and traceability of essential medicines across the country, particularly within the Western Province and beyond.
The upgraded facility spans 18,000 square feet and offers a total storage capacity of 2,295 cubic meters, reinforcing its role as a critical logistics node in the pharmaceutical supply chain Sri Lanka. Originally established in 2008 as a warehouse for Swiss Biogenic Ltd., the site evolved into a central distribution hub in 2015. Following a comprehensive refurbishment that began in July 2024, the WRDC resumed full operations in July 2025.

Speaking on the expansion, Sunshine Healthcare Lanka Ltd. CEO Shantha Bandara emphasized that the investment addresses critical gaps in the safe handling and distribution of medicines. He noted that the challenge facing the industry extends beyond demand generation to ensuring efficient and compliant delivery systems. The upgraded facility adheres strictly to National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) standards, reinforcing its commitment to quality and regulatory compliance.
Temperature control remains a key focus area within the upgraded warehouse. Medicines are stored in designated zones, with ambient conditions maintained below 25°C and specialized cold rooms operating between 2°C and 8°C for sensitive products such as vaccines and insulin. The cold storage capacity has been expanded from 15 cubic meters to 30 cubic meters, reflecting growing demand and the increasing importance of cold-chain logistics.

These include robotic process automation for invoicing and credit verification, sales force automation tools for order processing, and an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that provides real-time visibility into inventory and financial operations. Automated conveyor systems and specialized handling equipment further streamline internal logistics processes.
Healthguard’s distribution network now reaches more than 4,500 customer points across 467 towns in Sri Lanka, including private and government hospitals, pharmacies, modern retail outlets, and State Pharmaceutical Corporation Osusala outlets. The WRDC serves as the primary logistics hub for the Western Province, handling receiving, storage, quality checks, and dispatch operations.
Deputy General Manager – Operations at Healthguard Pharmacy Ltd., Pathma Kumara Warnakula, highlighted that the company operates under a Distribution-as-a-Service (DaaS) model. He stressed that the responsibility of a pharmaceutical distributor extends beyond delivery to ensuring that medicines reach patients safely and in optimal condition. Delivery vehicles are equipped with GPS tracking and real-time temperature monitoring systems, ensuring full compliance with cold-chain requirements.
The Healthguard Distribution revamps Colombo warehouse effort is further supported by a 24-hour delivery framework, with the company achieving a 97 percent next-day delivery rate and a 98 percent order fulfillment rate. This level of performance underscores the efficiency of the network and its ability to respond quickly to healthcare demands.
Operational resilience has also been strengthened through the installation of high-capacity backup generators and on-site fuel storage, ensuring uninterrupted cold-chain operations during power outages. This is particularly critical in maintaining the integrity of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals.
In terms of compliance and safety, the facility operates in line with ISO 9001:2015 standards and Good Distribution Practice (GDP) guidelines. Advanced tracking systems enable full traceability of products, allowing for rapid identification and recall if necessary. Strict protocols are in place for handling expired or compromised products, which are quarantined and disposed of through government-approved processes, including high-temperature incineration to prevent environmental contamination.
