During the facility visit, Healthguard Distribution Chief Executive Officer Shantha Bandara emphasised the importance of precision in healthcare logistics. Once shipments arrive at the distribution centre, they undergo rigorous quality inspections before being placed into storage. Each product is digitally tracked, enabling real-time inventory monitoring and full traceability. Temperature-sensitive storage is a critical component of the operation. The facility is equipped with an automated Kaiotee monitoring system that continuously regulates environmental conditions. Dedicated cold rooms maintain temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, ensuring the safe storage of vaccines, insulin, and other temperature-sensitive medications. Backup generators and on-site fuel reserves further guarantee uninterrupted operations, even during power outages.
An additional 30 cubic metres of cold storage capacity enhances the facility’s ability to manage high-demand and sensitive pharmaceutical products. This infrastructure is essential in maintaining product integrity across the supply chain, particularly for medicines that require strict environmental controls.
Inventory management is supported by advanced digital systems designed to improve both efficiency and safety. These systems enable better coordination across warehousing and distribution functions while reducing the risk of errors in handling or dispatch.
Beyond distribution, Healthguard also manages reverse logistics, including the collection and safe disposal of expired pharmaceuticals from pharmacies. This process ensures compliance with regulatory standards and contributes to a more responsible and transparent pharmaceutical ecosystem in Sri Lanka.
The company’s distribution network extends across seven regional delivery points and is supported by a fleet of 55 vehicles.
