Futamura and Biopap advance compostable food service solutions

Futamura and Biopap advance compostable food service solutions through a strengthened partnership aimed at accelerating sustainable packaging innovation for the global food service industry. The collaboration builds on a 25-year relationship between the two companies, combining technical expertise and a shared commitment to circular economy principles.

Futamura and Biopap advance compostable food service solutions with innovation

Futamura UK, known for its cellulose-based films, and Biopap, a specialist in compostable food packaging, have jointly developed high-performance solutions designed to address growing environmental concerns in food service operations. At the core of this initiative is the integration of Futamura’s NatureFlex regenerated cellulose film with Biopap’s compostable food trays, creating packaging systems derived from renewable raw materials with practical end-of-life outcomes.

Biopap’s approach focuses on the full lifecycle of packaging, from responsibly sourced forest-based materials to disposal through composting or anaerobic digestion. Its trays are engineered to perform under demanding conditions, withstanding temperatures ranging from -90°C to +175°C. This enables their use across a wide spectrum of applications including cooking, storage, reheating, and direct consumption, while maintaining strong barrier properties against oxygen, gas, oils, and grease.

Given that consumers often eat directly from Biopap packaging, contamination with food residue is inevitable. This makes compostability a critical requirement. The solutions developed with NatureFlex are compatible with industrial composting systems and can also be processed via anaerobic digestion, ensuring that both food waste and packaging can be treated together. Additionally, the materials remain recyclable within standard paper waste streams, enhancing flexibility in waste management.

The sustainability credentials of these solutions are supported by multiple certifications. NatureFlex films meet international compostability standards such as EN13432, ASTM D6400, and AS4736, and are certified for home composting under recognized protocols. Testing has also demonstrated full biodegradability under high solids anaerobic digestion conditions, reinforcing their suitability for integrated organic waste processing systems.

Biopap’s innovation has been formally recognised with the “Sustainable Development Award 2025” at the Ecomondo exhibition, highlighting its contribution to advancing circular economy practices. A lifecycle assessment indicates that its Genius Meal Trays can reduce carbon emissions by up to 66% compared to conventional polypropylene alternatives. Beyond emissions, the system supports biological circularity by returning nutrients to the soil, improving biodiversity and reducing reliance on fossil-based fertilisers.

The milestone also marks Biopap’s 25th anniversary and reflects the durability of its partnership with Futamura. Both companies emphasise that long-term collaboration, consistent technical development, and aligned sustainability goals have been critical in delivering scalable solutions to evolving market demands.

Industry stakeholders in Sri Lanka can access these innovations through Ferro Trading, the local agent representing the partnership. As global pressure mounts to reduce plastic waste and carbon footprints, the collaboration between Futamura and Biopap positions them at the forefront of sustainable food service packaging.
