ASPI and S&P SL20 both close lower as Food, Beverage & Tobacco sector dominates thin trading activity

Trading activity on the Colombo Stock Exchange slowed markedly, with turnover falling to LKR 1.54 billion — nearly half the monthly average of LKR 3.0 billion — as retail investors largely stayed out of the market.
The All Share Price Index (ASPI) declined 63 points to close at 21,416.57, while the S&P SL20 fell 21 points to end at 6,020.38. Trading volume also dropped sharply to 43.87 million shares, down from recent sessions.
With retail participation subdued, high-net-worth and institutional investors accounted for the bulk of the day’s activity, with turnover predominantly supported by crossings rather than open-market trading.
The Food, Beverage & Tobacco sector led turnover, contributing 30% of total activity, while the Banking and Capital Goods sectors together added a further 42%. Among individual counters, Sampath Bank, Browns Investments, Central Finance, Bukit Darah and Dialog Axiata were the largest negative contributors to the index.
Foreign investors were net buyers on the day, with inflows of LKR 274.35 million against outflows of LKR 171.15 million, for a net inflow of LKR 103.2 million. That single-day figure, however, stands against a far weaker longer-term backdrop: month-to-date foreign flows remain a net outflow of LKR 18.5 billion, while year-to-date net foreign outflows total LKR 54.8 billion. Seylan Bank led net foreign buying on the day, while Dialog Axiata saw the largest net foreign selling.
Among individual stocks, Sembcorp Energy and Calido Capital were the day’s top gainers, up 33% and 17% respectively, while Aitken Spence Hotels and People’s Merchant Finance were among the session’s weakest performers.

Business Impact
The steep drop in turnover and retail participation points to a cautious near-term mood among individual investors, with larger institutional players carrying the market instead. While the day’s net foreign inflow offers a modest positive signal, it should be read against sustained foreign selling over the month and year to date, meaning it does not yet represent a change in the broader foreign investment trend. Listed companies in the Food, Beverage & Tobacco, Banking and Capital Goods sectors saw the most concentrated investor attention during the session.
