The discussions highlighted the growing role of the Sri Lankan diaspora in strengthening bilateral relations while identifying new opportunities to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for tourism, business, and investment.
The meeting, held on 1 July 2026 at the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur, was attended by Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner Dharshana M. Perera, senior officials of the High Commission, and a delegation from FOMSO, the umbrella organisation representing 24 Sri Lankan-origin organisations across Malaysia.
During the discussions, High Commissioner Perera expressed appreciation for the continued cooperation and support extended by FOMSO in promoting stronger ties between the two countries. He emphasised the importance of further engaging Sri Lankan-origin communities living in Malaysia, particularly in areas such as Sri Lanka tourism, cultural promotion, and economic cooperation.

The FOMSO delegation was led by its President, Dato’ Yogeswaran, together with Executive Committee members including Lokaraja, Magendran, Sandhidevi, and other representatives. Also participating in the discussions were Minister Counsellor and Acting Deputy Head of Mission M. I. Mohamed Rizvi along with officials of the Sri Lankan High Commission.
Representatives of FOMSO briefed the High Commission on the organisation’s ongoing community programmes and initiatives designed to promote closer engagement with Sri Lanka. As the leading umbrella body representing Malaysian citizens of Sri Lankan origin, the organisation plays an important role in fostering cultural ties and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The meeting covered a broad range of areas including tourism promotion, investment opportunities, air connectivity, cultural cooperation, education, student exchanges, and community welfare initiatives.
A key focus of the discussions was the potential to promote Sri Lanka tourism among Malaysian communities with Sri Lankan heritage. Delegates highlighted increasing interest in leisure travel, cultural tourism, religious pilgrimages, and ancestral tourism, noting that many families continue to maintain close historical and emotional connections with Sri Lanka.
The delegation also discussed the importance of improving air connectivity between the two countries to facilitate tourism and business travel. Particular attention was given to exploring the possibility of direct air links between Malaysia and Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, which could enhance accessibility for visitors seeking to reconnect with their ancestral roots while supporting regional tourism development.
Investment opportunities also featured prominently during the meeting. Participants explored the potential for Malaysian investors and members of the Sri Lankan diaspora to contribute to tourism-related projects, including golf resorts, leisure developments, theme parks, and hotel investments. Such projects could support Sri Lanka’s tourism recovery while generating employment and attracting additional foreign investment.
Beyond tourism and investment, both parties recognised the value of strengthening cultural diplomacy and educational exchanges as part of a broader strategy to deepen bilateral relations. Student exchange programmes, cultural initiatives, and community engagement activities were identified as important avenues for building lasting relationships between the people of Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
