Foreign Investors Turn Net Sellers on CSE

Single-day outflow of LKR 612.5 million comes as year-to-date foreign selling on the Colombo bourse tops LKR 56 billion

Foreign investors pulled money out of the Colombo Stock Exchange on Tuesday, posting a net outflow of LKR 612.5 million — the largest single factor behind the day’s weaker trading session.

The selling was broad-based rather than concentrated in a single name, though JKH, DIAL and CCS accounted for the largest individual net outflows among counters tracked, with foreign investors also trimming positions in a handful of other names across the market. A smaller number of counters, including HAYC, SAMP and BIL, saw modest net foreign buying, but not enough to offset the day’s overall outflow.

Tuesday’s session marked the first trading day of September, meaning the month-to-date foreign flow figure of -LKR 612.5 million is effectively identical to the day’s outflow. Viewed on its own, a single day’s outflow of this size can look like a sharp shift in sentiment. Placed in context, however, it is a continuation of a much longer trend: year-to-date foreign flows on the CSE remain deeply negative, with cumulative net outflows exceeding LKR 56.3 billion. Tuesday’s activity did not meaningfully alter that trajectory — it added to an outflow that has been building for months.

Turnover across the market totaled LKR 2.32 billion for the day, more than a third below the monthly average of LKR 3.6 billion, suggesting that Tuesday’s foreign selling took place against a backdrop of generally subdued overall activity rather than a market-wide rush for the exits.

Business Impact

Sustained foreign selling matters for Sri Lankan businesses beyond the trading floor. Persistent foreign outflows from equities can weigh on market liquidity and valuations over time, potentially affecting the cost and availability of capital for listed companies looking to raise funds. For business owners and executives at listed firms, the broader YTD trend — rather than any single day’s figure — is the more relevant signal to track when assessing investor sentiment toward Sri Lankan equities.

What to Watch Next

Whether foreign selling eases as the new month progresses, and whether the pace of YTD outflows shows any signs of stabilizing, will be key questions for market participants in the weeks ahead.
