Three sectors account for two-thirds of daily trading activity as investor interest concentrates in export-oriented and materials counters

Trading activity on the Colombo Stock Exchange was heavily concentrated in a small number of sectors, with Food, Beverage & Tobacco alone accounting for 26% of daily turnover. Together with the Materials and Diversified Financials sectors, the three groups contributed 41% of total turnover, meaning close to two-thirds of the day’s LKR 2,446.47Mn trading activity was concentrated in a handful of industry groups.
The concentration coincided with broader gains on the bourse, as the ASPI closed 69.47 points higher at 21,395.11. Investor interest was notably evident in export-oriented and materials sector companies, with participation from both retail and high-net-worth investors reported to have increased compared to the previous session.
Turnover and Volume Leaders
At the individual stock level, COCO led turnover contributors with LKR 503Mn, representing 21% of total market turnover, followed by VFIN at LKR 281Mn (11%) and DIPD at LKR 231Mn (9%). JKH and HAYC rounded out the top five turnover contributors, each contributing around 4%. On the volume side, SEMB.X and SEMB together led activity at 18% each, followed by COCO at 17%.
Despite the concentration in specific sectors and counters, turnover remained 28.7% below the monthly average of approximately LKR 3.4Bn, suggesting that while today’s session saw focused activity, overall trading intensity across the broader market has yet to return to typical monthly levels.
Gainers and Losers
Among individual counters, COMD led gainers with a 10% rise, followed by COLO at 8%, while AINS, PALM and APLA each advanced 7%. On the downside, BALA led losers with a 6% decline, while VFIN, HAPU, COCO.X and KHC each fell 5%. Notably, VFIN appeared among both the top net foreign buys and the day’s top losers, reflecting mixed dynamics around the counter.
Business Impact
Sector concentration of this scale signals where investor conviction currently lies, with export-oriented and materials-linked businesses drawing disproportionate attention relative to the broader market. Companies and executives in the Food, Beverage & Tobacco, Materials and Diversified Financials sectors may see continued share price sensitivity to trading flows given the elevated activity levels. For businesses outside these sectors, today’s data suggests investor attention remains selective rather than broad-based, which may affect capital-raising conditions or valuation benchmarks for companies awaiting increased market participation.
What to Watch Next
Market participants will be watching whether sector concentration persists into coming sessions or broadens out, and whether overall market turnover can close the gap with the monthly average as participation trends evolve.
