Banking, Insurance, and Food, Beverage & Tobacco sectors accounted for more than half of daily turnover as overall market activity ran well below monthly averages
Trading activity on the Colombo Stock Exchange remained concentrated in a small number of sectors on a day when overall turnover stayed well below typical levels. The Banking sector led daily activity with a 22% share of total turnover, while the Insurance and Food, Beverage & Tobacco sectors together contributed a further 32%, meaning the three sectors combined accounted for more than half of all trading on the bourse.
The concentration came against a backdrop of subdued overall activity. Daily turnover stood at LKR 2.13Bn, a decline of 38% from the monthly average of LKR 3.4Bn, while volume totaled 63.98Mn shares. HAYL, ACL, SLTL, HNB and DIAL were among the top positive contributors to the ASPI during the session, providing support to the broader index even as turnover stayed muted.
Retail investors accounted for a significant share of market activity during the session, while participation from high-net-worth investors remained comparatively low. The narrow sector concentration, paired with below-average turnover, suggests the day’s activity was driven more by routine positioning in a handful of liquid, large-cap counters than by broad-based market participation.
Among individual counters, SLTL, VLL and TESS.X posted gains of 7% each, while BFN and ECL each advanced 10%. On the downside, RHTL declined 7%, with MRH, LHL, MHDL and RHL.X also among the day’s decliners, each falling between 5% and 6%.
