SLIM SME Development Awards 2026 recognise innovation, branding and sustainable SME growth

The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) has announced the return of the SLIM SME Development Awards, continuing its national initiative to recognise and encourage entrepreneurial excellence among Sri Lanka’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The 2026 edition, known as SMEDA 2026, is designed to encourage businesses across the country to adopt professional marketing practices while strengthening their ability to compete in an increasingly demanding marketplace. The awards will provide participating enterprises with an opportunity to benchmark their performance against recognised standards and gain national recognition for their achievements and growth potential.

SLIM President Enoch Perera said the initiative is intended to give small and medium-sized businesses greater confidence and recognition as they seek to expand beyond domestic markets. He emphasised that stronger SME performance has wider implications for the country’s economic development and competitiveness.

The awards will assess participating businesses across key areas of business and marketing performance. As with previous editions, an independent panel of experienced professionals will evaluate the enterprises, providing an external assessment of their capabilities and achievements.

According to SLIM Vice President Events and Sustainability Rajiv David, SMEDA 2026 will look beyond conventional measures of business success. The programme will recognise innovation, resilience and responsible growth while helping enterprises build visibility, credibility and confidence as they pursue sustainable expansion.

The focus on professional development comes at a time when Sri Lankan SMEs continue to play an important role in employment creation, innovation and community development. SLIM Vice President Education and Research Manthika Ranasinghe said the organisation remains committed to supporting the progress of SMEs through recognition, market-driven development and wider adoption of professional marketing practices.

SLIM CEO Chamil Wickramasinghe described SMEDA 2026 as more than a conventional awards programme. He said the initiative seeks to empower entrepreneurs by celebrating achievements, encouraging best practices and highlighting the importance of strategic marketing, strong branding and customer-focused growth.

The SLIM SME Development Awards will continue to recognise MSMEs while also highlighting emerging businesses and sector-specific excellence. The evaluation process will examine how participating organisations have applied marketing, branding, customer focus, innovation and sustainable business practices to deliver measurable progress.

For many smaller enterprises, recognition through a national platform can provide benefits beyond the award itself. Demonstrating strong business practices and measurable performance can help companies strengthen their credibility with customers, partners and potential investors while creating greater visibility for their brands.

SLIM SME Development Awards 2026 Project Chairman Maduranga Weeratunga said the programme aims to help elevate local enterprises into scalable and sustainable brands. Head of Jury Dr. Roshan Fernando added that the awards serve as a benchmark encouraging SMEs to continuously improve their standards.

The return of SMEDA 2026 therefore places greater emphasis on the role of professional marketing and strategic business development in helping Sri Lankan enterprises move from small-scale operations towards sustainable, competitive brands.
