Bairaha Farms receives ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas Verification as the poultry producer strengthened its position in Sri Lanka’s corporate sustainability landscape through internationally recognized climate accountability standards.
Bairaha Farms receives ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas Verification for sustainability leadership
Bairaha Farms PLC announced that it has become one of Sri Lanka’s leading poultry businesses to receive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Verification at the organizational level with a “reasonable level of assurance,” marking a significant achievement in environmental reporting and sustainability governance.
The verification was conducted under the internationally recognized ISO 14064 framework, which establishes standards for quantifying, monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and removals. The framework provides two assurance levels, with “reasonable assurance” regarded as the more rigorous and comprehensive standard. By securing this higher level of verification, Bairaha Farms demonstrated the accuracy, transparency and credibility of its carbon footprint reporting processes.
The company stated that its GHG statement was prepared in compliance with ISO 14064-1:2018 standards and independently verified in accordance with ISO 14064-3:2019 requirements. The certification was issued by the Sri Lanka Climate Fund (Pvt) Ltd, operating under the Ministry of Environment, making Bairaha Farms the only poultry company to receive this recognition under the ministry’s purview.
The official certificate was presented during a ceremony held earlier this year at the Secretary’s Office of the Ministry of Environment. The certificate was formally handed over by Secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Climate Fund, K. R. Uduwawala, in the presence of senior representatives from both organizations.
Among those attending the event were Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Sri Lanka Climate Fund Harshani Abeyrathna, Assistant Manager – Project and Quality Management Yashodha Lekamge, and Project Executive Madhubhashini Gunathilaka.
Commenting on the achievement, Managing Director of Bairaha Farms, Yakooth Naleem, described the certification as a defining milestone for the company’s sustainability journey.
“This verification from the Sri Lanka Climate Fund is a defining moment for Bairaha Farms. Attaining this level of international independent climate verification has significant positive implications for our stakeholders, which include local communities and global partners,” he said.
He further noted that responsible corporate leadership increasingly requires transparency and accountability in measuring and reducing environmental impact. According to Naleem, the certification reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to building a sustainable future as Bairaha Farms marks 50 years in Sri Lanka’s poultry and food production industry.
The certification also arrives at a time when global markets are placing growing emphasis on low-carbon and traceable supply chains. Analysts note that businesses with independently verified emissions reporting are increasingly better positioned to engage with international buyers, institutional investors and regulators focused on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) compliance.
Industry observers believe the recognition could strengthen Bairaha Farms’ standing among export-oriented partners and stakeholders seeking climate-conscious suppliers in the food and agriculture sector. It also aligns with broader efforts to support Sri Lanka’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
The company emphasized that improving emissions visibility across its value chain remains an ongoing priority. Management stated that the verification is not viewed as a final destination, but rather an important step toward building a more transparent, resilient and climate-conscious business model capable of supporting responsible growth.
The move reflects a wider shift among Sri Lankan corporates toward sustainability reporting and carbon management practices as climate-related disclosures become increasingly important across international markets. For the poultry sector in particular, independently verified greenhouse gas reporting may become a critical differentiator in maintaining competitiveness and stakeholder confidence in the years ahead.
With this latest recognition, Bairaha Farms continues to strengthen its ESG credentials while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable operations, environmental accountability and long-term value creation for stakeholders.
