Sri Lanka’s Sampath Bank opens first branch in Colombo Port City, becoming the first financial institution to conduct banking transactions within the country’s landmark special economic zone.
Sri Lanka’s Sampath Bank expands services with Colombo Port City branch
The opening marks a significant milestone for both Sampath Bank and Port City Colombo, reinforcing the development’s ambitions to establish itself as a leading regional business and financial hub. Located at Building 1 of the Business Centre within the Commercial Hub of Port City Colombo, the new branch expands banking access for businesses, investors, entrepreneurs, residents, and visitors operating within the zone.
The branch strengthens Sampath Bank’s footprint within Sri Lanka’s first multi-services Special Economic Zone and highlights the growing financial infrastructure being developed to support economic activity within the project.
According to the bank, the new facility offers a range of self-service banking solutions designed to provide convenient access to everyday financial transactions. Customers can utilize Cash Recycler Machine (CRM) services for cash withdrawals, deposits, and other routine banking requirements without needing to visit traditional banking counters.
As an Authorised Persons Licensed Institution under the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, Sampath Bank is positioned to deliver specialized financial services tailored to the unique regulatory and commercial environment of Port City Colombo.
The bank said its portfolio includes local and foreign currency banking solutions, inward investment accounts, trade finance facilities, treasury services, international remittances, and advanced digital banking products. These services are intended to support both resident and non-resident clients conducting business within the jurisdiction.
The launch comes as Port City Colombo continues to attract attention as a potential destination for international investment and financial services in South Asia. The availability of comprehensive banking services is viewed as a critical component in building confidence among investors and businesses seeking to establish operations within the special economic zone.
Sampath Bank noted that the branch will play an important role in providing the financial infrastructure required to facilitate investment flows, support commercial activity, and contribute to the long-term development of the Port City ecosystem.
The opening also builds on the bank’s earlier involvement within the development. Prior to launching the branch, Sampath Bank installed a Cash Recycler Machine at The Mall at Port City Colombo, providing one of the first banking access points within the zone for cash withdrawal and deposit services.
With the establishment of its Colombo Port City Branch, Sampath Bank is further strengthening its presence in one of Sri Lanka’s most significant economic development projects. The move aligns with broader efforts to position Port City Colombo as a competitive international business destination capable of attracting regional and global investors.
As economic activity within the special economic zone expands, access to efficient and specialized banking services is expected to become increasingly important. Through its new branch, Sampath Bank aims to provide the financial expertise, products, and services necessary to support businesses and investors operating within the evolving Port City Colombo landscape.
The development also underscores the growing role of the banking sector in facilitating investment-led growth and supporting the transformation of Port City Colombo into a modern financial and commercial center. As more businesses establish operations within the zone, financial institutions are expected to play a key role in enabling transactions, managing capital flows, and supporting cross-border commercial activity.
The opening of the branch therefore represents not only a milestone for Sampath Bank but also another step forward in the ongoing development of Port City Colombo as an emerging regional financial hub.
