Logical accepted into Y Combinator marks a major milestone for Sri Lanka’s technology ecosystem, with the AI startup founded by two Sri Lankan engineers securing a place in the prestigious Silicon Valley accelerator and raising more than Rs. 150 million in initial funding.
Logical accepted into Y Combinator after raising over Rs. 150 million in funding
The startup is believed to be the first company with a fully Sri Lankan founding team to be accepted into Y Combinator (YC), one of the world’s most influential startup accelerators. The achievement provides Logical with access to global mentorship, investor networks and resources as it develops an AI-powered productivity platform for knowledge workers.
Logical accepted into Y Combinator follows the company’s successful fundraising of more than Rs. 150 million, providing the capital needed to accelerate product development and expand its presence in Silicon Valley.
Logical is developing a proactive AI startup focused on creating a desktop AI copilot that understands a user’s work context across multiple applications. Unlike traditional AI chatbots that respond only when prompted, Logical’s technology is designed to anticipate user needs, transfer context between applications and help complete tasks with minimal manual input.
The platform can assist users with drafting emails, writing documents, taking meeting notes and automatically identifying action items. It also enables users to perform actions across multiple workplace applications through a simplified interface, reducing repetitive tasks and improving productivity.
The company was founded by Samurdhi Karunaratne, also known as Sam Karu, and Anushka Idamekorala, who first met as six-year-old students at Dharmaraja College in Kandy. Their academic journey continued with outstanding performances at the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination, where they ranked first and second respectively in the Kandy District in the mathematics stream.
Both later pursued engineering degrees at two of Sri Lanka’s leading state universities. Sam graduated from the University of Peradeniya before receiving a PhD scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Prior to founding Logical, he also worked at NVIDIA, gaining valuable experience in advanced computing and artificial intelligence.
Anushka graduated from the University of Moratuwa before building his software engineering career, including professional experience in Singapore. He later received a PhD scholarship from the University of Virginia in the United States and earned national recognition by placing first in Sri Lanka in IEEEXtreme, one of the world’s leading competitive programming competitions.
Commenting on the milestone, Chief Executive Officer Samurdhi Karunaratne said building a company alongside a childhood friend in Silicon Valley was both rewarding and inspiring.
He said acceptance into Y Combinator reinforces the belief that Sri Lankan entrepreneurs should think bigger about building globally competitive technology companies capable of competing on the international stage.
Chief Technology Officer Anushka Idamekorala said the company’s ambition is to demonstrate that world-class AI products can be built by Sri Lankan engineers. He noted that Logical is focused on creating deeply technical products capable of standing alongside technologies developed by leading Silicon Valley companies.
Founded in San Francisco, Y Combinator is widely regarded as one of the world’s most successful startup accelerators. Its highly selective three-month programme supports early-stage companies by providing mentorship, funding opportunities and access to a global network of investors. Alumni include internationally recognised technology companies such as Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe and Reddit.
The Logical accepted into Y Combinator achievement highlights the growing capabilities of Sri Lankan engineering talent in the global technology sector. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries worldwide, the startup’s success demonstrates the increasing potential for Sri Lankan founders to build innovative products that compete at the highest international level.
