Aberdeen Holdings World Environment Day initiatives brought together companies across the diversified conglomerate to promote sustainability, environmental stewardship and community engagement through a series of projects supporting conservation, recycling and sustainable agriculture across Sri Lanka.

Aberdeen Holdings World Environment Day campaign advances sustainability across Sri Lanka

The Group’s activities reaffirm its long-term commitment to environmental responsibility while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) through practical, community-driven action.

Marking World Environment Day, Aberdeen Holdings organised a range of sustainability initiatives involving several of its subsidiaries, demonstrating a coordinated approach to environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. The programmes encouraged employee participation, community collaboration and long-term environmental awareness while addressing key sustainability challenges facing the country.

According to the Group, the initiatives were designed to create lasting environmental impact by combining the strengths of businesses operating across different sectors. The activities focused on coastal conservation, sustainable agriculture, responsible waste management and recycling education, reflecting Aberdeen Holdings’ broader sustainability strategy.

One of the flagship programmes was led by Expack Corrugated Cartons PLC, one of Sri Lanka’s leading manufacturers of corrugated cartons and sustainable packaging solutions. Employees joined together for a coastal clean-up campaign covering approximately 1,350 square metres of shoreline.

The clean-up resulted in the collection and removal of 656 kilograms of waste, highlighting the positive environmental impact that can be achieved through collective action. The initiative also reinforced awareness among employees about the importance of protecting Sri Lanka’s coastal ecosystems from pollution and improper waste disposal.

Supporting rural communities and sustainable farming, Tropikal Global launched Phase Two of its King Coconut Seedling Initiative in Kosgama. The programme distributed king coconut seedlings to local farmers and suppliers as part of an ongoing effort to preserve one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive agricultural products while strengthening rural livelihoods.

The company has already distributed more than 500 seedlings, with another 1,000 currently in progress. The initiative aims to encourage long-term cultivation while helping farming communities expand sustainable agricultural practices that support both environmental conservation and economic development.

Aberdeen Holdings also continued its focus on environmental responsibility through Neptune Recyclers, which expanded its EduCycle programme with educational sessions on plastic recycling, waste management and circular economy principles.

The awareness programmes were conducted at the National College of Education in Mirigama and The British School in Colombo, engaging both students and educators. Participants learned about responsible waste disposal, recycling methods and the importance of reducing plastic pollution through everyday behavioural changes.

By investing in environmental education, the Group hopes to encourage future generations to adopt more sustainable lifestyles while supporting Sri Lanka’s transition towards a circular economy.

The initiatives collectively demonstrate Aberdeen Holdings’ belief that sustainability extends beyond individual projects and requires continuous engagement across businesses, employees and communities. Through collaborative action, the company aims to integrate environmental stewardship into its broader business operations while creating measurable social and environmental value.

The Aberdeen Holdings World Environment Day programme also reflects the growing role of Sri Lanka’s private sector in supporting national sustainability goals. As businesses increasingly embed ESG principles into their operations, initiatives such as coastal conservation, recycling education and sustainable agriculture contribute to broader environmental resilience and community development.

Looking ahead, Aberdeen Holdings says it remains committed to expanding its sustainability agenda by encouraging innovation, strengthening stakeholder partnerships and supporting programmes that deliver long-term benefits for both people and the environment. Through these sustainability initiatives, the Group continues to reinforce its vision of responsible corporate citizenship while making meaningful contributions to Sri Lanka’s sustainable future.
