Hayleys Mobility launches all-new JAECOO J5 HEV in Sri Lanka amid rising EV demand
The launch marks another step in the evolution of Sri Lanka’s automotive market, where consumers are increasingly exploring fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. Introduced by Hayleys Mobility Limited, the mobility arm of Hayleys Fentons Limited, the new hybrid SUV aims to cater to motorists seeking a balance of performance, efficiency, technology, and comfort.
Manufactured by China’s leading passenger vehicle exporter Chery Automobile, the JAECOO J5 HEV enters the Sri Lankan market at a time when interest in new energy vehicles is steadily increasing. Industry stakeholders attribute this trend to a combination of economic considerations, changing consumer preferences, and growing awareness of sustainable transportation solutions.
The vehicle is powered by a 1.5-litre Turbo GDI engine paired with an electric motor and Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), delivering a combined output of 221 horsepower and 295 Nm of torque. According to the company, the hybrid powertrain enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just 7.9 seconds while maintaining smooth and responsive performance across different driving conditions.
Beyond performance, fuel efficiency remains one of the strongest selling points of the hybrid SUV. The JAECOO J5 HEV offers an estimated fuel economy of 18.9 kilometres per litre, equivalent to 5.3 litres per 100 kilometres. Combined with a driving range of more than 950 kilometres on a full tank, the vehicle is positioned as an attractive option for both urban commuters and long-distance travellers seeking to reduce fuel expenses.
The exterior design features a bold and contemporary appearance characterized by a wide stance, distinctive front fascia, and sharp LED lighting signature. Available in Alpine Green, Zircon Grey, Snowy White, Glacier Blue, and Canyon Black, the vehicle offers customers a variety of styling options while maintaining its premium positioning within the market.
Inside, the hybrid SUV combines comfort with technology-driven convenience. The cabin has been designed to deliver a refined driving experience, featuring intuitive controls, modern connectivity features, and passenger-focused comfort elements aimed at enhancing everyday usability.
Priced at Rs. 19.9 million, the JAECOO J5 HEV is supported by a seven-year vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty, providing long-term assurance for customers investing in hybrid technology.
Speaking on the broader market outlook, Hayleys Fentons Limited Managing Director Hasith Prematillake noted that consumer interest in new energy vehicles has grown significantly in recent years. He attributed the momentum to both environmental considerations and economic advantages associated with alternative-energy transportation.
According to Prematillake, Sri Lanka’s vehicle taxation structure has contributed to the increasing popularity of electric and hybrid models by making them more competitively priced than comparable petrol or diesel vehicles.
He also welcomed the growing number of automotive brands entering the segment, noting that increased competition helps improve consumer confidence and accelerates market adoption.
“We like to see more models and more competition because that will make people get used to new energy vehicles and build confidence,” he said, adding that conventional petrol and diesel vehicles currently account for approximately 70 percent of the market, while new energy vehicles represent around 30 percent.
Prematillake further highlighted the broader economic benefits associated with greater adoption of hybrid and electric mobility solutions. Sri Lanka currently spends approximately US$ 4 billion annually on fuel imports, making transportation electrification a potentially important contributor to reducing the country’s foreign exchange outflows.
He noted that the country possesses substantial renewable energy resources, including hydro, wind, and solar power, which could support a gradual shift toward cleaner transportation. According to industry estimates, hydro and wind energy currently account for around half of Sri Lanka’s electricity generation, with policymakers targeting a 70 percent renewable energy share by 2030.
At the same time, Prematillake called on the government to reconsider financing policies for electric vehicles by restoring the loan-to-value ratio to 90 percent or at least 80 percent. He argued that improved access to vehicle financing could accelerate the adoption of new energy vehicles and support the country’s broader sustainability objectives.
As the market continues to evolve, Hayleys Mobility launches all-new JAECOO J5 HEV in Sri Lanka with confidence that the vehicle will strengthen its position within the growing hybrid and electric mobility segment. Supported by an established sales and after-sales network, technical expertise, and customer support infrastructure, the company believes the latest hybrid SUV has the potential to become a significant contributor to Sri Lanka’s transition toward cleaner and more efficient transportation solutions.
