Year-to-date outflows near LKR 36 billion as overseas investors continue reducing equity exposure
Foreign investors have continued to pull capital out of the Colombo Stock Exchange, extending a selling trend that has persisted through the year, according to the latest market data.
On Tuesday’s session alone, foreign investors recorded a net outflow of LKR 185.1 million, with inflows of LKR 36.56 million against outflows of LKR 221.66 million. While a single day’s outflow is modest by historical standards, it adds to a pattern that has now defined much of 2026 so far.
Month-to-date, net foreign outflows stand at LKR 1.72 billion. On a year-to-date basis, the figure widens sharply to LKR 35.83 billion, underscoring a sustained reduction in foreign holdings of Sri Lankan equities rather than a short-term fluctuation.
Individual counters showed a mixed picture within the broader selling trend. WIND recorded the largest single-day foreign outflow at LKR 80 million, followed by JKH at LKR 47.4 million and ACL at LKR 41.7 million. On the other side, HAYC attracted the largest foreign inflow at LKR 13 million, with SMOT and SAMP also seeing modest foreign buying interest.
The Capital Goods sector, which led overall market turnover for the session, was also among the counters most affected by foreign selling, pointing to a possible link between sector-level foreign positioning and broader trading activity.
Domestic institutional and retail investors have largely absorbed the foreign selling, with turnover for the session reaching LKR 1.54 billion, though this remained below the monthly average.
Business Impact
Sustained foreign outflows can weigh on liquidity and valuations over time, particularly for large-cap counters that rely more heavily on institutional foreign participation. For business owners and executives, the trend is worth monitoring as a signal of broader investor confidence in Sri Lankan equities, separate from day-to-day index movements. Companies planning capital raises or secondary offerings may find foreign investor appetite an important factor in timing and pricing decisions.
What to Watch Next
Market participants will be watching whether the pace of foreign selling moderates in the coming weeks, and whether any policy or macroeconomic developments prompt a shift in overseas investor sentiment toward Sri Lankan equities.
